best man speech - CLICK HERE for the Wedding Forum Home Page
Neil McCarthy
Hi all,

I am sure its been covered many times before. I am the best man in a few
weeks time and looking for inspiration for a speech. Have done a web search
but most sites charge for pre-written speeches. I am looking for some good
one liners or sites that may assist.

Any ideas???

thanks,

Neil

Talk about the couple whose wedding it is. Say something like "it's
great that they found each other".

Skip the one-liners.

That will go over a whole lot better than trying to be a wannabe
stand-up comedian.

I agree with Amazon.
If you are not "funny" by nature, it can bring the whole speech down.
If you do want to bring in some humor, talk about something the HC
encountered. (eg when he first went out with her he wore this horrible
shirt,
it must be love if she still wanted to continue the relationship..)
be sure it involves the HC the bride tends to get left out in the best man's
speech)

I was a little worried about my best man as he is normally not very
comfortable speaking in front of crowds. But he had a hilarious
speech which everyone still talks about.

It went something like this. I made up some names.

"I've known Kimo since kindergarden. When I heard he was getting
married to Allison I was overjoyed, they're such a great couple! I
was also extremely honored to find out that I had been chosen to be
the best man.

It was some time later that I discovered that as the best man, I would
have to say a speech. I became extremely nervous about this as I
normally don't speak in front of crowds so I turned to the biggest
source of information I know: the internet.

The internet said that the best man's speech should last approximately
the same amount of time that it takes for the groom to make love to
his wife on their wedding night." <he then glanced down at his watch
and looked a bit surprised and then said>, "Thank you very much." and
left the podium.

The whole crowd just about died laughing.

Just an idea I guess :)

(snip vulgarity)

If I were at a wedding where the best man said that, I'd think very
little of him.

I usually agree with you, but I thought this was funny and
a LOT less embarrassing than many I have heard. Many fall
into two categories, either very vulgar or rather boring
to everyone but the groom as his whole life is rehashed:
"I met Jim the first day of pre-school, yadda, yadda, yadda."

Cute and a little naughty.
I like it :-)

Niki,

Hi Amazon,

It really depends on what sort of wedding party you have and the type
of people. A good best man will know the crowd and what is acceptable
or not. My family and my wife's family are very easy going and we
enjoy a good laugh and that type of good natured ribbing is not
considered an affront to us.

I truly doubt that any guests were offended, and if they were, then
that really is their issue. The wedding is about being with family
and friends and sharing in the joy of a new union. I thought it was
great that my best man was able to get such a good laugh at my expense
and that he did such a good job. I know it went well as I had
mentioned earlier, I still have people bringing that up and saying it
was such a clever speech.

I have been at weddings where some really ribald humor has been used
sort of pushing the line of decency. For some, this speech may have
crossed it, but I thought it was well done and delivered perfectly.

Our reception was a huge success, we had an excellent live band, great
food, a wonderful ballroom, an open bar, and people stayed til very
late having fun and celebrating (perhaps the open bar helped :) ). I
could think of no better way than that to celebrate my wedding.

Regards,
PKM

Nico Girl
The movie '4 Weddings & A Funeral' had at least one example of a racy
best man speech that went wrong--funny in the movie, but not funny in
real life.
